This summer the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), which is implemented by ECMWF, released the Assessment Report on European Air Quality 2025. On the occasion of the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗲𝘀, let’s take a look at some of the key findings: • Air quality continues to improve in Europe, with emissions of key air pollutants declining across the continent • Over the past decade, emissions of sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides have fallen by approximately 3-5% per year across the EU • The most significant reductions have been achieved in industry and road transport The CAMS Air Quality report provides a clear indication that air quality policies are working. At the same time, it demonstrates that year-to-year variations in weather conditions can significantly influence pollution levels, even as long-term trends continue to improve. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. This data is fully available to the national meteorological services in the Member States. The Centre also offers a catalogue of forecast data that can be purchased by businesses worldwide and other commercial customers. The supercomputer facility (and associated data archive) at ECMWF is one of the largest of its type in Europe and Member States can use 25% of its capacity for their own purposes. The organisation was established in 1975 and now employs around 500 staff from more than 30 countries. ECMWF is one of the six members of the Co-ordinated Organisations, which also include the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe (CoE), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).

🌍🌐 New Climate Digital Twin impact sector data is now available via the DestinE Platform. Developed as part of the European Commission’s Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative, the Climate DT integrates impact-sector applications directly into its production workflow. This allows climate simulations and sector-specific information to be produced together at kilometre-scale spatial resolution and hourly temporal resolution. The newly released data covers: 🔋 Renewable energy 🔥 Wildfires 💧 Hydrology 🌧️ Extreme precipitation The applications translate kilometre-scale climate simulations into sector-specific indicators and information designed to support climate adaptation and decision-making. Satellites have transformed weather forecasting. At ECMWF, they provide the vast majority of observational information behind Earth-system analyses and reanalyses, filling gaps where conventional observations are sparse. The next generation of satellite missions, alongside better ways of using available observations and advances in AI, will allow ECMWF to extract more value from every measurement. We’re excited to join this years Adopt AI - Grand Palais Conference as an official partner. 🌍🌐 Meet the experts of Destination Earth (DestinE): Fernando Iglesias-Suarez is part of the team developing a machine learning (ML) climate emulator for the DestinE initiative of the European Commission. As a climate scientist and scientific coordinator of the team developing the Climate Emulator within DestinE, Fernando works at the intersection of climate science and machine learning. The climate emulator uses machine learning to reproduce key aspects of the detailed, physics-based simulations produced by the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT), but at a much lower computational cost. It also aims to seamlessly integrate different components of the Earth system, including the atmosphere, ocean and land. A team led by Predictia Intelligent Data Solutions is developing the climate emulator, together with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), in collaboration with ECMWF. ▶️ Watch the full video: https://lnkd.in/e7cwGquc
